Sewing Room Peepshow Nov 2012
Collaboration between Sandra Chirico & Carolyn Weisnagel
Vitrine project incorporating several sewing/garment making elements viewed through embellished peepholes. Project included an embroidery partially finished stained with blood with an image of the cover of a fascist women's magazine (wearing the same embroidery), video of a sewing machine loop with sound, view of a messy cutting room floor, iron burns on a shirt and pillowcase, bowl of dye with long fabric piece slowly absorbing the dye throughout the week. We wanted to explore the mistakes that can occur when crafting a garment. Pricking yourself with a needle, iron burns and colors running in the wash, along with the droning noise of a sewing machine nervously operating. Shops always show perfectly pressed and effortless clothing, through this "peepshow" we invite the passer by to peek into the work room of a busy seamstress.
